Double Sided Wood Stove

The double sided wood stove is a tough find, at least here in the states.  Double sided fireplaces are quite common, even though they are more inefficient than even single sided hearths. 

The UK has several manufacturers that make them, but as yet they are not available here.  The biggest issue is to make them EPA certified.  The additional opening makes the engineering and efficiency quite tricky.  Not only that, but the potential spots where you could place a two-sided stove in most homes are quite small, especially when you think about rural or log homes.  However, even a double sided insert would be a step up in heating efficiency from an open hearth.

If you find a European brand that you like, the next best thing would be to track down any American suppliers for it.  Some smaller shops occasionally do stock them on request.  Here’s a couple of places that recently stocked it:
