Barrel Wood Stove

The barrel wood stove is always a popular topic, especially when it comes to the homemade or DIY variety. Its a pretty simple design and you can even get kits for them to convert your old drums.

A barrel wood stove usually consists of a simple 55 gallon drum thats been cut down and modified to serve as a heater. They are popular for several reasons. Drums are cheap and normally plentiful. The kits are readily available and sold by respected manufacturers such as Vogelzang. The design often makes them very effective as a heat radiator; they get quite toasty! However, they tend to be much less efficient than a dedicated wood stove for using fuel. Since they are often not airtight it definitely affects the quality of the burn. They are also hard to regulate as far as temperature goes. They are also usually pretty ugly, another reason why they are kept out back or in a distant shed.

Even with those issues, given the price (usually under $50) its generally not a bad deal, especially for a shed or garage.

Keep in mind though, some of the possible issues with a homemade heater. Since a barrel stove is usually outside or in a detached part of the house, some of the safety issues are a little less of a problem. You should still consider safety and permit issues, especially if its in a garage or shed.
